Chicago Philanthropies in Need During the Pandemic

As the COVID-19 pandemic wreaks havoc on the U.S. economy, charitable and philanthropic organizations face unprecedented demand for items that range from fundamental needs like food and rent money to less urgent provisions for things like school materials and the beauty of art.

Chicago is home to numerous philanthropic organizations that are eager for contributions so they can continue to serve their core constituencies. Here are some the Windy City’s top charity operators and what they need more of right now:

Franciscan Outreach
This group has long been a significant resource for homeless people living in Chicago. They report an urgent need for a variety of items, such as bed linens, towels, gift cards for grocery stores, and pre-paid C.T.A. cards. Franciscan Outreach has been a trusted organization since 1963, when it was founded on the west side of Chicago by Father Phillip Marquard.

Snow City Arts
One of the most trusted charities in Chicago, Snow City Arts, gives sick children in hospitals joy and motivation by providing one-on-one sessions with artists. The COVID-19 outbreak has required Snow City Arts to suspend operations in all hospitals. That has also dried up its primary revenue sources. It needs contributions to ensure the program can survive what is likely to be a lengthy shutdown.

A Safe Haven
This excellent organization helps Chicagoans who are struggling with addiction. They provide a variety of treatment resources and help people who have been rendered homeless due to addiction. They say they are in great need of white linens, toiletries, clothing, and operating cash.

H.O.M.E. stands for Housing Opportunities and Maintenance for the Elderly. It works with low-income seniors who require living space-related needs, from intergenerational housing to home repair services. This group also assists seniors with shopping and getting around town for essential appointments. H.O.M.E. is seeking cash donations along with new games, puzzles, and magazines.

United Way of Lake Country
This group has established the COVID-19 Community Response Fund that helps a variety of other nonprofit organizations that are serving diverse needs. They need help with enabling people to gain access to emergency supplies of food and basics. They also help pay rent, mortgage payments, and utility bills.
